A key stretch of the Buckingham Canal—from Kasturba Nagar junction to Thiruvanmiyur—is set to undergo a major upgrade at an estimated cost of ₹45 crore, combining ecological restoration with enhanced public infrastructure.
The project will feature continuous pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycling tracks, seating zones, and children’s play areas, transforming the canal into an accessible and vibrant community space. Emphasis has been placed on urban greening, with plans to plant native saplings and develop dense Miyawaki forests to improve air quality, support biodiversity, and create sustainable green corridors.
To tackle recurring flooding in low-lying areas, the initiative will incorporate nature-based drainage solutions designed to improve resilience during monsoon seasons.
Overall, the project aims to rejuvenate a neglected waterway while providing cleaner surroundings and accessible open spaces. Given the canal’s importance for connectivity and urban development, the upgrade is expected to deliver both environmental and social benefits, enhancing quality of life in the region.
